Author’s note
While providing as much cultural and historical information I could find with regard to the via Francigena, I have also gone beyond these to include more diverse subjects. Simply by following the route I discovered so many interesting facts about people, places and events, each with its fascinating tangent, that there was a very real risk the book would never be completed. So for the sake of everyone involved, not least my unfortunate partner, I have endeavoured to make a sensible selection that you will hopefully find as compelling as I do. In addition, a book about a pilgrimage has to say something about its pilgrims, so I have included a selection of personal accounts, poems and contributions from organisations that support the pilgrim cause. Finally, a book can never be complete, perfect or entirely satisfactory (and is even less likely to be when written by such an amateur author), so I prefer to call my Companion to the via Francigena a work in progress. If in the process of reading it you find any gaps, inaccuracies or indeed anything that could be improved, please let me know. I am happy to accept suggestions and will be even more happy to say that the next edition has been produced in collaboration with its readers.
