Lightfoot Guides to the via Francigena are written for Walkers, Cyclists and Horse Riders The guide books provide specific information for each group enabling everyone to meet their personal goals. The complete, Edition 6, Lightfoot series for the via Francigena consists of four books: step by step guides from Canterbury to Besançon, Besançon to Vercelli, Vercelli to Rome and the Lightfoot Companion to the via Francigena describing the culture and history of key sites along the route. This 3rd volume traces 848 kilometers from Vercelli to St. Peter’s Square in Rome.
The route closely follows the 10th century route used by Archbishop Sigeric the Serious, but adapted to current conditions. The guide book contains many alternative routes to reduce total distance, avoid possible difficulties or to gain access to specific locations. The entire distance has been divided into 38 manageable sections of an average length of 22 kilometers. For each section full page scale maps are provided with detailed instructions for each significant junction. Accommodation and other vital facilities are listed for the entire length of each section.
The GPS coordinates of each instruction are available for immediate download.
Written by Paul Chinn and Babette Gallard, edition 6 was first published in April 2014.

1 review for Lightfoot Guide to the via Francigena – Vercelli to St Peter’s Square – Rome

  1. Rated 4 out of 5

This guide is extremely thorough with explaining all the navigation markers, waypoints, distances, direction, etc. I’m sure it will be accurate when I step foot on the trails, however…my first impression is of the size and, more specifically, the weight. It is heavy! Heavier than anyone walking 800 km wants to have to carry. In future editions, please choose lighter bonded paper…like travel dictionaries that have ultra light newsprint. This book could easily be half the weight that it is. Many pilgrims spend hundreds of dollars/Euros on ultra lightweight and compactable mid layers/base layers/rain gear, all to save the extra weight. What a shame that this guide is heavier than necessary….make it a “lightfoot” guide, not a “leadfoot” guide.
In future editions, perhaps embolden the print on the maps. In poor lighting, or without reading glasses, the script is difficult to read.
Outstanding detail listed for the route. Nice to have both routes (original and new) as an option.
