When I ask a group of children: “Why is it that we call owls wise?” , they reply:
“Their eyes – they can see through the night” …. “They can turn their heads completely round”……. “They wear spectacles”……. “They know everything”……. “Merlin had one”……. “They fly without a sound.” I tell them: “Perhaps it’s to do with all these things but, forgive me, the answer may also lie within the lines of this poem.
“Here’s a wise owl, for your birthday
I think I saw him…………….”
