The table below shows the opening periods for the pass road for the last nine years. Open here means that the barriers are lifted at the entrance to the pass and that efforts will be made to clear the road in the event of a snow fall.
There is no formal closure of the pathways. Indeed, it is said that more people stay in the hospice during winter than summer, but the road is the safe “out” for inexperienced alpinists or those without appropriate equipment e.g. snow-shoes.
